call to Artists – Celebrating the importance of the Cuyahoga River and the beauty of the Cuyahoga Valley

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) and the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce details of the Fifth Annual Plein Air Competition-Along the Crooked River: 100 Years Later. This plein air event will take place in Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Village of Peninsula, Ohio, Friday through Sunday, June 7 to 9, 2013.

En plein air is a French expression referring to the process of painting “in the open air”. Peninsula’s competition, which has drawn participants from around the country, invites artists of two-dimensional art medium to paint at selected sites in the Village of Peninsula, as well as locations along the Cuyahoga River. The decision to highlight the river this year is in commemoration of the massive Flood of 1913 that engulfed the Cuyahoga Valley and destroyed the Ohio and Erie Canal.

Kathleen painting, easel, plein airArtwork must be created on site in the true impromptu plein air style. The competition is open to artists 18 years of age and there is no limit on the number of pieces of artwork produced during the competition. However, only two pieces may be submitted for judging. Prizes will be awarded. Artwork created during the competition will be displayed at Peninsula Art Academy Gallery from Saturday, June 29 through Saturday, August 10, 2013, and will be for sale.

Beginning Watercolor with Nicki Lanzi at PAA

Beginning Watercolor with Nicki Lanzi, Saturday, April 20 or 27, 2013,10 am – 3pm.  You don’t need much to create a beautiful painting.  I will cover many techniques and tricks of the trade with you.  Watercolor workshops are one my favorite things to attend, and over the last 25 years, I have attended many.  You will get to share the knowledge I have acquired, from taking part in these classes.  A very simple wash; a simple stroke of the brush, is a very basic step in creating a painting, which is where we will begin.  Here is a basic list of beginner supplies.  Watercolor tablet or one full sheet of paper, 22×30; Arches is one of the best to use.  A #6 round and a one or two inch flat watercolor brush, Royal brand is good to start with.  A Non porous board; a plastic cutting board works or an artist board with a clamp.  A bowl for water, and a rag, or paper towels.  Red, yellow and blue small tubes of Winsor Newton paints.  (If you buy a cheaper paint, there is more water than pigment in them, and your paintings will look very pale.)  Last but not least, a cup of coffee!  $50.00, or $45.00 for PAA members.

Introduction to Silverpoint with Elinore Korow

Essentially it’s drawing with sterling silver wire.  Permanent? Yes. Exquisite? Definitely.  Small in size?  Yes.  Silverpoint works very nicely on special surfaces 6” x 8” and smaller.  Over time the silver oxidizes, as silver will, and goes from a slivery gray to a tea colored brown.   Albrecht Durer’s “Praying Hands”, 16th Century German, is a familiar example.  It’s done on treated paper and is easy to do.  Join us and try your hand at this exciting antique technique.  Minimum 4 students – maximum 12.  A nationally known portrait artist and former designer for American Greetings, Elinore is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, and currently teaches for credit at CIA.  Take advantage of this special price for PAA students!  The fee for the 8-week class is $250 or $225 for PAA members.  Registration Form  and materials list.  New!  Dates extended!!  Sunday afternoons from 1:30 – 4:30 pm, for 8 weeks, starting May 19, thru July 21, except Memorial Day weekend, May 26, and Fourth of July weekend, July 7, 2013.
